Prabhjot Singh lives with his father, mother, and older sister in Ludhiana. His father works as a farmer and a bus driver to support his family. They were able to get by on his father’s wages and land for a long time, but in 2014, Prabhjot’s mother was diagnosed with throat cancer. Although this was eventually treated, 6 months after remission, the doctors found a tumour in her brain and she is still undergoing treatment. To date, Prabhjot’s family has spent 700, 000 rupees on his mother’s medical treatment. . Medical expenses in India are extremely high and often drive many families into extreme poverty. Prabhjot’s family is also on the brink of bankruptcy and his father is not sure how long they will be able to keep paying for his mother’s medicine along with all of their other expenses, including Prabhjot’s education.
